Escape from the Planet of the Robot Monsters

C64 Game Review & Description

Prepare to blast off into a world of high-stakes heroism and pixel-perfect peril with Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters on the Commodore 64. This game takes the cake for the longest title in the galaxy and doubles down with gameplay that's equally expansive. Here, players don the space boots of intrepid heroes tasked with a mission that sounds exactly like what it says on the tin: escaping from a planet teeming with rogue robots.

Set in a distant future where robots have apparently watched one too many sci-fi reruns and decided to take over, Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters offers a deliciously campy slice of arcade action. Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and let's face it, who wouldn't?), is to infiltrate the robot-infested stronghold, rescue hapless humans, and put a stop to the mechanized menace's dastardly plan.

Graphically, the game is a vibrant tribute to the era of neon and nostalgia. The Commodore 64's palette is put through its paces to bring to life the game's labyrinthine levels, each teeming with traps, treasures, and a horde of homicidal robots. The visuals strike a perfect balance between cartoonish charm and the eerie ambiance of a planet gone rogue, making each rescue mission feel like a Saturday morning cartoon with stakes.

Gameplay-wise, Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters is as straightforward as its title. Navigate through maze-like levels, blast any circuit board that moves, and liberate captured humans from their high-tech prison cells. However, don't let the simplicity fool you. The game demands sharp reflexes and sharper wits, as players must outmaneuver robot patrols, dodge deadly lasers, and solve puzzles to advance. It's a test of both arcade prowess and strategic thinking, ensuring that victory feels earned, not given.

The controls are a dream for any space adventurer, offering precise and responsive handling of your character. Whether you're dodging a laser barrage or lining up the perfect shot to take down a robot overseer, you'll feel in complete command of your digital destiny.

But the true joy of Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters lies in its unabashed embrace of sci-fi tropes. The game doesn't just wink at the genre; it gives it a bear hug, presenting players with a tongue-in-cheek adventure that's as much about having fun as it is about saving the day.

And for those daring enough to delve deeper into this robot rebellion, a vault of hints, tips, and cheat codes awaits. These secrets, scattered like space dust across the game, can provide the edge needed to outsmart the robot horde. From hidden paths that bypass swarms of enemies to codes that boost your firepower to interstellar levels, these insights are the ace up the sleeve of any would-be hero.

So, if you're ready to channel your inner space ranger and embark on a mission filled with danger, daring, and a healthy dose of robots gone wild, Escape From the Planet of the Robot Monsters on the Commodore 64 is your ticket to adventure. Strap in, power up, and prepare for a blast of retro gaming glory.

First Wave - Take the first left, then the next right before proceeding straight up. When faced with the three possible courses, choose the middle route for the easiest run.

Second Wave - Take the second right, go straight up and then choose the far right route.

Third Wave - Turn left straight away, then go up. Take the first right, followed by the first left, before going straight up and selecting the end route once more.

Guardian Hint

Apparently, if you hold down fire continuously until you're killed by one of the end of level guardians, you'll be invincible after reincarnation while you hold down fire on a second occasion to take out the leader.
